Often memovox discs tend to be stored stacked horizontally in boxes since they are thin and flexible. Over time, this method of storage can cause a buckling or warping of the memovox discs. The most efficient way of storing these discs is to put them in acid free paper sleeves and store them vertically similar to vinyl records.
In addition, memovox discs are made of a cellulose material and can become infected with vinegar syndrome. In order to slow down this type of deterioration packets of molecular sieves made available by Kodak Company can be put in the storage box of the memovox discs. If vinegar syndrome is suspected, the disc must be preserved at once before the deterioration interferes with the disc playback.
In addition, the memovox disc changes shape over time and the relaxing grooves become extremely shallow causing difficulty in tracking the stylus. Storing the discs in a temperature and humidity controlled environment will aid in preserving the oral data on these discs.
Soundscriber and Gray Audograph discs should also be stored in acid free paper sleeves and stored vertically to prevent warping. |
